<p><strong>The Comoros</strong>, an island in the Indian Ocean, is located off the eastern coast of Africa on the northern end of the Mozambique Channel. It lies between the northern Madagascar and northeastern Mozambique. This island nation is officially known as the Islamic Federal Republic of the Comoros.</p>
<p>The Comoros is the third smallest African nation by area with an estimated population of 798,000, one of the highest population densities in Africa. Its name was derived from the Arabic word <em>qamar</em>, which means moon. It is known as one of the poorest countries in the world.</p>

<p>The Comoros Archipelago is rich in volcanic activity. Mount Karthala is the country&#8217;s highest point, at 2,361 m or 7748 ft. It also sits the Comoros largest patch of its disappearing rain forest. </p>
<p>The Comoros&#8217; official religion is Islam and over 99 percent of its population is made up of Sunni Moslems. Around 1,300 of the population are Christians. The official languages of the island are French and Arabic while the majority of the people speak Comoran, the mixture of the Arabic and Swahili language.  </p>
